eco friendly laundry

eco friendly laundry does not have to be hard! these 5 simple steps will both save you money and help the planet 🧺 win win!

  1. wash with cold. almost everything can be washed with cold water. 75-90% of the energy used for washing is to heat the water, so by washing on cold you get major energy savings. washing on cold helps with microfiber pollution. significantly more microfibers (tiny plastics) are shed in hot water cycles than cold water.

  2. plastic free detergent: detergent sheets are a plastic free option that have a smaller eco-print for packaging. look for ones that are also made with a plant derived formula vs. synthetic chemical detergent. these are my current favorite.

  3. hang what you can. dryers are a huge energy user. by hanging your clothes as much as possible, you’ll both save $$$ on your utility bill and extend the life of your clothes.

  4. get dryer balls. wool dryer balls are a great chemical free and natural alternative to dryer sheets. dryer balls help to separate your clothes, speeding up the drying process and saving energy. these are the ones I use.

  5. wear things more than once. obviously some things need to be washed after one wear, but others (jeans, jackets, etc) can get many wears out of them before washing. more wears = longer life for the clothes and less energy used.
