best summer hikes in San Diego

summer is here! while that’s great in almost every regard, a lot of my favorite hikes around san diego are inland, aka where it’s hot AF during the summer. if you’re looking to get outside this weekend, i’ve rounded up a few of my favorite coastal trails that’s are perfect for the summer months. these are all on the easier side, so perfect for days your priority is getting outside in the fresh air vs. getting a workout in.

1. annie’s trail: this hidden gem is such a unique hike that takes you along san elijo lagoon, through slot canyons, and ending with amazing views out to the ocean. tip: take the “difficult” route to go through the canyons. there is a small ladder you’ll need to climb to get to the top. the easy route will take you out and back on an accessible footpath
distance: 1.5 mile loop

2. torrey pines: extremely popular and for good reason, these trails boast some of the best views in SD. you can wind your way through as many or few of the trails as you like, either ending on the beach and walking back along the water, or looping back through the park. tip: visit early on a weekday to avoid crowds and get free parking along the side of the road.

3. kwaay peak, mission trails regional park: while cowles mountain is better known and always busy, kwaay peak is lesser known but my preferred trail because it is always quieter. the trail is short but steep, short but steep with impressive views out over the park at the top. tip: park at the entrance to the park and further from the trailhead for some added steps.

distance: 2.5 miles

4. swamis beach to cardiff: more of a walk than a hike, the path leads along the cliffs edge for ocean views & a breeze. this trail is nice and flat, making it a good one to do with kids or for a morning jog.

distance: 3 miles
